Hometown: Gentry

Come one, come all!

We woke up to snow one day soon after our arrival

Mom and I set up the kitchen ALL DAY Monday but it was great to have it done! We stopped to watch a movie Monday night - we turned out all the lights - big mistake. I went into the kitchen to get something and a mouse ran across the floor! His adventure was short lived - Ryan put out 13 traps in addition to the 2 we already had and we found him dead the next morning. MICE BEWARE!

My kitchen window view - sometimes there are horses, sometimes cows, sometimes both, but there are always birds at the feeder or sitting on the porch. How peaceful!

Our new refrigerator!

New washer and dryer
This was after the washer walked itself out from the wall while washing a load of jeans. Ryan and I decided 1000 rpms of spinning power and heavy jeans don't match up. So we'll use the low or medium setting on those from now on...

Enjoying breakfast Thursday morning before Mom and Dad left. We even have curtains and curtain rods up! And we love our new dining room table. We have room for it to be completely up with 8 people around it! We've hung pictures on nails that were already there until we can decide where to put them.

Parting is such sweet sorrow

Now that we FINALLY have internet at our new home in Gentry, I'll try to update this blog with the happenings of the last few weeks.
We can't say a big enough THANK YOU! to all those who have helped us through this new adventure - you have made our lives SO much less stressful by feeding us, housing us, helping us pack and run errands, finding us boxes, loading and unloading, cleaning, measuring, giving opinions, and giving encouragement over the phone or through e-mail even if you couldn't be here. We love you all so much and are so thankful to have you as friends and family!

New Years week Carrie and Ryan were in town. Carrie helped me pack and organize a lot! Her handwriting on the boxes reminded me she was "there" on moving day even if she couldn't be there in person.
Ryan and Carrie, MJ and Randy also gave us some much needed break time from packing and our even-more-than-usual sardine sized house. Mary Jane fed us some wonderful meals and we enjoyed some time over at the Heilman household with Kelli and Jonathan too for some Settlers and ping-pong after Ryan and Ryan played tennis together.

Then Stephanie got back from break and was at our house every night to help with packing. She is quite the ingenious packer! We invented lots of protective boxing for pictures, glass objects and much much more.

We got to the point that we just wanted to hack things up with these big knives so we wouldn't have to pack ANYMORE! It was sad to unpack those kitchen boxes without her here in Arkansas.

And this was the finished product - in only ONE of the rooms... How did we FIT ALL OF THIS IN THERE?

Mom and Dad arrived with the Penske truck on Friday about 1 PM and after loading up our new refrigerator at Best Buy, we headed home to try to get the truck up the driveway. No such luck. We ended up having to take everything from the house (on the right) down the hill across the street to the parked truck (top left of the picture).

Ryan's new truck was a big help - loading up at the house...

The puzzle packers

I didn't take any pictures of the empty house so won't include them here. We left it as quickly as possible. There are so many things about this little place I will NOT miss, but as Stephanie and I walked out for the last time it felt like that last episode in Friends where all of them are standing in the house remembering the good times they had there and they all leave after they put their keys down on the counter... If we had actually left all the keys, we would have had 5: Ryan, Jaclyn, Kelli & Jonathan/Ryan & Carrie (they both had it at different times), Stephanie, and Uncle Jimmy (from his short painting stent).
A house that started out so empty and lonesome grew into a jam-packed place full of fun and good memories:
rewiring the NOT grounded outlets with Nick Gillen
cleaning out 25 spiders and then deciding not to fight them, just live with them
hanging pictures with Hollie
bundling up to stay warm
having a massive Uno Attack! party in my living room
taking a freezing cold shower when Chris and Jonathan D turned off my hot water heater!
getting Chris's jeep out of the ditch
playing catch with Ryan in the front yard
study groups with Stephanie and Ryan
pacing the house while writing my master's project
Ryan and my first kiss
running out to the front porch to see what new wedding gift had arrived
waking up to rain on the roof the day of Carrie's wedding
Many Sabbath meals and good times with friends
Friday nights with Kelli and Jonathan
movies and meals and good talks with Carrie and Ryan
watching the tree come down in the front yard
finding space for Ryan's stuff
coming home with Ryan to stay

I'm so thankful that God blessed me with this little duplex for my last few years in Collegedale!
Collegedale is the longest place I have ever lived in - almost 8 years.

THE CREW
(minus Uncle Jimmy taking the picture, John Nafie, and Ross)
On Saturday night we all gathered to say goodbye at the Heilman's house. MJ did a great job of telling that part of the weekend on her blog - lets just say the tears flowed almost immediately. Each of these people mean so much to me! It is truly sad to leave them all "out east."
The Heilmans have been like parents to me - always a few minutes away full of love and support, a comfortable couch, good food, and listening ears. They have welcomed Ryan too with open arms and I'm so thankful for their friendship and love. MJ & Randy: Ryan and I will be coming home to visit so make sure to leave a bed open for us (we know you have plenty)!

We drove through the rain and accidents to West Memphis, AR where we spent the night. One of the great moments was crossing the gigantic Mississippi River over a massive bridge right outside Memphis amidst Dad honking the Penske's horn.

Mom and Dad pull out of the hotel Sunday morning in Arkansas

(With signature shot credits to Carrie) Here's me in between Mom and Dad in the Penske and Ryan behind... somewhere in Arkansas... Once we got to the Ozarks the scenery was amazing but eastern AR looks just like this... flat and boring.

And we pulled up to the new house in Gentry and had it unloaded in less than 2 hours if I remember correctly. Sadly, I didn't stop to take any pictures of our helpers - 5 guys from the dorm and Mr. Rector, the English teacher who lives next door. They were so fast and we were so greatful for their help. Mom, Dad, Ryan and I found Siloam Springs - Walmart, Lows, and a Chinese restaurant and picked up supper and some supplies before coming home to crash!

The newest member of the family

Our F-150 has yet to be named but we'll keep you posted - Ryan's brain is sure to christen it soon!

Let the packing begin!

Here is what our life currently looks like (and probably will look like for the next 6 months except reversed).

Carrie thought Ryan's description of this box's contents was picture worthy.

Carrie and Ryan came down Monday night and have been helping us pack and giving us a break for some fun times in between. We've really enjoyed having them around this week for playing tennis, watching movies, playing Settlers, and much more. MJ has fed us a few times too which has been most helpful.

Hollie's parents offered us 4 free tickets to see the Enchanted Lights at Rock City! It was great to spend time with Hollie and get a chance to see Rock City - I wanted to see it before we moved away since everything says "SEE ROCK CITY!"

Pictures will not do it justice but it was neat to walk through the natural rock formations and gardens decorated with lights. Some places were very narrow - Carrie might put some pictures up on her blog of those!

The view of Chattanooga from the overlook - how beautiful - we might not see this many lights together for a long time!

Hopefully, it won't be too long between the times there are at least 3 of us girls together!

Carrie is looking at the waterfall under the big lit up star on the mountainside

Listening to some beautiful dulcimer music on the log swing

On Friday in the midst of our vehicle buying and maintenance spree we all paused for a meal at Los Potros - Hollie and I always seem to end up here when we get together so we thought we'd take the rest of them with us.

Right before Ryan's last drive with Lucille... his face says it all. Lucille has been his dependable ride since 2002. It was sad but he is very excited about his new acquisition which you will have to wait to see until a future post. We're thankful for Randy's expertise in helping us with this new purchase!

One week to go! May our stacks of packed boxes increase!

Christmas X 2

Well, I know this is belated but with all of the changes going on - we're in the fast lane. However, I felt I must still share a few pictures from our Christmas at home. We've decided there are some great benefits to having 2 families - 2 stockings, 2 times to open presents, 2 Christmas dinners - in general, Christmas lasts longer!

Knights

Jake joined us for the presents, until he got a bone, then I think he didn't pay us much attention.

Pa & Ma Claus

I took this picture using the gorilla pod Ryan got me for Christmas - I used it to put my camera vertically hanging onto a tall skinny lamp. Carrie and I are always setting our cameras on things to take pictures and trying to make them level. Now I have a new tool!

Fords

Ryan got Dad a remote control helicopter which made for a lot of excitement while they were testing it out.

I can't wait to put these up - maybe over a piano??? ;-)
There was definitely a music theme to my gifts which was fine with me! Valeri got me pj pants with music symbols on them, mom and dad gave me a piece of organ music I've been wanting, and Ryan got me a book I wanted called Musicphilia (written by a doctor about how music affects the brain). Ryan's Christmas was a sports theme - Perfect Pushups, weights, athletic/coaching clothes, sports books and Coach Carter movie, a golfing moose Christmas tree ornament, NY Giants golf club head covers... need I say more... I think these themes may be recurring for the rest of our lives - what do you think?

I don't have the energy to put up more pictures of Christmas so you'll have to imagine the rest of it!

Our new home

Here's our first look at our new home on the faculty drive!
Take these as a before - and I'll post an after in a month or so.

We have a deck, a dog door, and a nice birdhouse and birdbath (on the right of this picture)

Our backyard looks out onto a cow pasture and is complete with a built in tree platform

Living room

Dining room and kitchen
(laundry room and garage are back through the kitchen, living room to the right)

Main bathroom

Master bedroom

Our house has three bedrooms! We're looking forward to having all that space!

Here's our first home purchase - a new larger table. It will seat up to 8 people when all four sides are up so that the table is round. We think its pretty neat!

Sides down - they fold under and stay - no leaves to store!

All opened up
